Strawberry Studios
Strawberry Studios is one of Stockport's best known buildings. It enjoys a colourful history, most notably as world famous recording studios, and the first major recording studios to be built outside London in the 1960's. It prospered until the early 90's, when it finally succumbed to a downturn in the demand for high quality recording facilities.
The list of artists who have recorded at Strawberry is almost endless, but 10cc had a share in the business from the late '60's and recorded much of their best known material there. It became a central part of the 1980's 'Madchester' scene, with the Stone Roses and many others recording albums there. Other artists who credit the Studios include The Smiths, James, Joy Division, Barclay James Harvest, New Order, The Buzzcocks, Paul McCartney, and many others. A certain Mark Owen met a certain Gary Barlow whilst working at Strawberry in the 1990's, and a short while later Take That was formed.
In the early 1990's, Strawberry Recording Studios went the way of many other high end facilites and ceased trading. Since then it has provided high quality office accomodation for a variety of tenants, ranging from graphic design to government services.
